Benedicto C. Subialdea, 89, of Fort Worth, Tx, completed his earthly journey on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
Bene, or Abbott, as he came to be called by those who loved him, was born on May 8, 1935, in San Benito, Texas. He was a hardworking man with humble beginnings, but the life he lived could only be called extraordinary.
The early seeds of his long career started when he was a boy, helping in his father's automotive garage. It was there that he first saw the woman that would become his wife, Clara Hernandez; they went on to have nine children. He was a rare man of unimpeachable integrity, deeply modest, quietly faithful, frugal, and guided by a strong moral compass. Abbott demonstrated diligence and sacrifice, working long hours as an auto body repair man, this in the face of severe injury, tragedy, and even cancer, only retiring at the age of 81. He didn't delay retirement out of need. He simply felt it was important to be of use. It was also important to him to be in a position to help his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or anyone, should the need arise. He was often witnessed fixing up a car for someone who couldn't afford to buy one, buying used items he didn't need to help a stranger trying to make ends meet, offering groceries out of his own pantry. He was privately silly, gave funny nicknames, loved children and animals, and delighted in sugary treats. His presence conveyed a feeling of safety, and he could always be counted on when things were difficult. Without trying, he became the warm center that his enormous family gathered around.
In a loud and busy world, this small, quiet man was a giant. While his time here is done, we are the living reverberations left in his wake, and so he lives on.
