Nancy Jo Smothermon

Nancy Jo Smothermon went to be with the Lord on February 15, 2025 at the age of 61. Nancy was born to Otis and Beverly Long on September 23, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida. The family is planning a small, private celebration of life for a later date. Details will be made available to close family and friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Otis Long, her mother, Sue Long, her late husband, Steve Smothermon, her best friend Leslie Nunnally, her son, Dustin Smothermon, and her grandsons, Joshua and Xzavier Milazzo. Nancy is survived by her sister, Leanna List (Robert List), her sister Sherry Watson (Ken Watson), her brother Mark Long (Robin Long), her daughter Erica Markham (Kevin Markham), her daughter Kayli Olsen (Blake Olsen), her grandchildren, Merrianne, Carl, Raeleigh, Ellie, and Vivienne, her ex-husband David Johnson, stepsons Justin and Chris Johnson and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that she loved dearly.

Nancy owned and operated her pride and joy, the Richland Chambers Progress area newspaper for many years. She enjoyed writing, editing, and interfacing with the community to bring the paper to life. She pored over her children all while working as a full-time business owner and a single parent. She achieved her dream of being a published writer and was featured in multiple papers, magazines, and books. Nancy enjoyed writing, sailing, traveling, and spending time with her family. She loved attending the Dallas Boat Show where she marketed and represented the Richland Chambers Progress, showcasing the fishing and boating opportunities on the third largest inland lake in Texas. She loved all adventures, from standing atop the Eiffel Tower to parasailing in South Padre, Texas. 

Nancy was one of a kind, with a heart full of love, joy, and hope despite all of life’s challenges that came her way. She is going to be greatly missed. Until we are reunited in Heaven with you, we will be missing you.
